CORY, IT'S OKAY FOR YOU TO DO this (and I agree with the spirit of the thing, man...), because you're such an outspoken guy and the books you make support the ideas you defend. I mean to say that you have an audience that knows you well. And to be fair, so few good authors are giving away their stuff, that it is still a novelty (free books are still viewed upon as the last resort for the guy who can't sell them to a real publisher). But if everybody starts doing it, I do believe sales will decrease. Readers will come to expect it and realise that it is indeed cheaper if they put their prejudices aside and start reading text on screens instead of paper (still the main reason people will go out and buy a book that's available online for free). In fact, it might even go the other way around - if you don't free your stuff, noone will read you... until of course you become such a well known author that you will be able to publish and sell "premium print" editions. Free fiction should be an appetiser... let them taste it, but if they come back and want more, they'll have to pay for it. Don't give away all of your best work. Take care.
